Northern clinches ticket to state tournament

The Northern Patriots entered the seventh inning of Friday’s 3A South regional championship game tied 1-1 with the defending 3A state champion La Plata Warriors.

However, Northern’s Joe Sharkey singled in the go-ahead run to put the Patriots up 2-1.

“When I got up [to the plate] I felt this boost of confidence,” Sharkey admitted. ” … I felt that anything he was throwing at me, if it was a strike, I was going to hit it.”

Northern was able to score two additional runs in the inning thanks to the bat of Bret Blevins.

Northern and Coach Marshal Kawecki now advance to the state tournament semifinal, a game scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, at Joe Cannon Stadium in Anne Arundel County.

“It’s awesome,” Kawecki said of the state tournament bid, the second of his coaching career. ” … I think the kids, more than anything else, are starting to see that golden ring hanging up there.

“We are hitting the ball much better. We are not making many errors, but I think our pitching is just really coming around.”

Blevins, from the mound, also had a complete-game performance in the victory only giving up one run to the defending state champions.

“It feels great,” Blevins said of being crowned regional champions. “This is something I have waited for my whole high-school career.”

On his approach from the mound, Blevins added: “I knew if I just threw the ball over the plate and let them get the hit –my defense has been playing really strong throughout the entire playoffs — they were going to make the plays for me.”

“Bret has done a phenomenal job,” Kawecki added. “He came in against Huntingtown in relief and shut them down, and he did a great job here today.”

La Plata, with the loss, ends its first season ever as defending state champions much to the dismay of head coach Dan DeVitis.

“The thing that cost us the game today was the lack of clutch hitting, that’s what did it,” DeVitis said. “We stranded eight runners, and had runners on second and third a few times and couldn’t get them in.

“Northern had guys on base, they got them in, we had guys on base and we didn’t.”

La Plata’s lone run of the contest came on a Seth Donnelly RBI in the third inning.

Warriors back in regional final

By Andy States
SMAC Content Manager

Watching his team blow out to a six-run, first-inning lead, La Plata coach Dan DeVitis thought his team might enjoy a prolific day at the plate and a comfortable win over the visting Great Mills Hornets. That didn’t quite turn out to be the case.

After the first-inning outburst, the Warriors struggled but still managed to hold on for a 7-3 win over the Hornets in a 3A South semfinal on Wednesday afternoon.

“The first inning was really nice,” DeVitis said. “We came out and hit the ball well. We scored six runs and I guess I fell into a false belief that we were going to really hit tonight.”

La Plata (10-6-1) did not score again except for one run in the fifth. But Zach Turner and Matt O’Grady came through with 4 2/3 innings of solid relief to help keep Great Mills (7-10) off the board over the final four innings to earn the Warriors a second consecutive trip to the 3A South finals.

La Plata, the defending 3A state champion, graduated the bulk of last year’s team including eight starters. But with the upsets of top-seeded Huntingtown and second-seeded Chopticon, the third-seeded Warriors are the top seed left standing and will host Northern in the regional final at 4 p.m. on Friday.

“It’s really a nice feeling,” DeVitis said. “I don’t think anybody expected us to be there. Of course, there’s been some breaks along the way.

“We have to take care of our own business. We have to play better than we did today.”

La Plata takes SMAC

By Andy States
SMAC Content Manager

It may have been just his first SMAC tournament, but the tournament atmosphere was nothing new for La Plata freshman Aaron Gomez.

Gomez, currently ranked 16th in the USTA Mid-Atlantic Boys 16 singles rankings, did not drop a set in winning his first conference championship. Gomez knocked off Leonardtown’s Robert Renfrow 6-2, 6-4 in the boys singles final to earn his first SMAC championship.

The title was one of two for La Plata — girls doubles team Anna Wells and Danira Lutui also nabbed the top spot — to help the Warriors take home the team trophy on the final tournament of the SMAC tournament at North Point High on Tuesday.

“It feels good,” Gomez said of winning his first conference championship. “I don’t really feel the same because I’ve been through a lot of tournaments before and I’ve won a lot of them. It’s not much of a difference. You can’t think about it. You just have to move on and focus on what you’re going to do now. And next is regionals.”

The combatants in the boys singles final would figure to have a long high-school rivalry ahead, as Renfrow is also a freshman and currently ranked 43rd in the USTA rankings. In Tuesday’s final, Gomez won the first set comfortably, but struggled to seal the match in the second before taking it 6-4.

“Second set he started stepping it up and I started making a little bit of errors,” Gomez said, “so I had to grind it out from there.”

Wells and Lutui continued what has been a seemingly annual tradition of La Plata winning the conference’s girls doubles with a straight-set win over Christiana Madson and Katie Lewis of Patuxent. The La Plata tandem won the final 6-2, 6-1. In additon to the team’s two championships, La Plata had three other entrants place top four to push the team to the team championship.

Huntingtown’s Zack Newman and Josh Olexa outlasted the La Plata team of Taylor Ross and Marcus Cole 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 in the boys doubles final, while Huntingtown also took the top spot in the mixed doubles. The team of Kim Beyer and Ben Nottage dropped just one game in defeating Thomas Stone’s Mazi Tucker and Costas Galiatsatos for the championship.

Familiar foes met in the girls singles final, with Patuxent’s Cari Hopson battling Calvert’s Amanda Ocker. Hopson won her second straight conference singles championship, topping Ocker 6-1, 6-1.

“It was hard. The score does not tell how the points went,” Hopson said. “A lot of our games went to deuce.”

As county rivals, Hopson and Ocker are quite familiar with each other. But that does not mean the matches are similar, according to Hopson.

“You never know what to expect because both of our games change,” she said. “You have to bring your game every time.”

Next up for the qualifying SMAC players is the regional tourament, which starts this Thursday at North Point and is scheduled to wrap up on Saturday at Annapolis High.
