Wrestling: 4A/3A South Regional Semifinals

By James A. McCray III
Prince George’s County, Content Manager

The La Plata Warriors hosted the 4A/3A South regional dual wrestling championship semifinals Wednesday evening as Huntingtown (SMAC), and C.H. Flowers and Oxon Hill (Prince George’s County) each look to earn a spot in the finals.

The Hurricanes wrestled to the finals with a 49-27 victory over Oxon Hill on the strength of pins from Joey Rice (119 pounds) and Tommy George (125).

Huntingtown also added two technical falls, those from Brandon Baumgartner (103) and Hunter Rowe (152).

“I think they did well,” Huntingtown head coach Terry Green said of his team. “They came here working hard and came out with a win. … We got out six points where we needed to, so we could take off and not wrestle our 215 or heavyweight.

“Oxon Hill’s 215 and heavyweight are two of the better guys around, so I had a chance to rest my guys and get ready for La Plata.”

Oxon Hill earned two pins on the night as Abby Solomon (112) and Andre Wilcox (140) earned those respectively.

“We were a little disappointed in tonight’s efforts,” Oxon Hill coach John Carpenter said. “We were hoping for a little better performance. … I would have liked to see us hold together as a team. We tried to tell them, win or lose, stay behind everybody.”

La Plata advances to finals

Hosts La Plata earned six pins to punch its ticket to the finals and get past C.H. Flowers, 64-10.

Dylan Dull (103) started the match off with his second-period pin as Jason Jennings (112), Mike Garrow (125), Nick Romero (135), Brent Mowry (152), and Nick Howser (160) earned the others.

Flowers’ Zane McBride earned a major decision in his 171-pound match for the lone victory earned on the mat.

4A/3A South Wrestling: La Plata 59, Huntingtown 7

By Andy States
SMAC Content Manager

For a solid year, the same bad memory has lingered throughout the La Plata Warriors wrestling team. And as the 4A/3A South regional duals were about to start on Wednesday night, that same bad memory provided some extra fuel before the Warriors took to the mat to defend their spot as the top team in the region.

“We were in the wrestling room today before the match,” La Plata 215-pound junior Alex Ingagliato said. “Coach [Todd Sharp] made us all sit down. Next thing you know he started screaming, ‘North Carroll, North Carroll.'”

North Carroll defeated La Plata in the narrowest of fashions in the state dual semifinals last February — the only loss the Warriors had suffered to a Maryland team in three years — and denied the team a chance to three-peat as 4A/3A state dual champions. But after Wednesday’s regional duals at La Plata, the Warriors earned the opportunity to again compete for the state crown. La Plata defeated Huntingtown 59-7 in the regional dual final to win the 4A/3A South for the fourth consecutive season to earn a spot in the state duals this Saturday at Marriotts Ridge High. The 4A/3A semifinals are scheduled to start at noon.

“That’s just our motivation, to go out there and think of North Carroll and how we felt after that,” Ingagliato said. “I know after we lost to North Carroll that’s probably the worst I’ve ever felt in my life. That was like somebody died in my family.”

The journey has been different this year, as the Warriors had to replace six seniors from last year’s squad — a group that was a part of two state dual titles, as well as two state tournament championships. But the goal remained the same, as well as the rallying cry.

“It’s motivated us all year,” Sharp said of the North Carroll loss. “It’s special because of the turnaround, six new guys, and they’ve really come along all year. I feel we wrested Huntingtown better than we did the first time and that’s all you can ask for as a coach.”

La Plata (16-0) defeated Huntingtown (13-3) 44-18 when the teams met on Jan. 13. But on Wednesday it wasn’t nearly as competitive.

The Warriors won 12 of 14 matches head-to-head. Dylan Dull (103 pounds), Jason Jennings (112), Nick Romero (135), Joey Higgs (145), Nick Houser (160), Jaylen Jones (171) and Ingagliato all won by fall. Chase Ursiti (140) and Brent Mowry (152) each worked major decisions, while Daniel Brannon (119), Mike Garrow (125) and Mitchell Keith (189) each won by decision.

Keith won the most dramatic match of the finals, hitting with a reversal and near-fall in the final 10 seconds of his 189-pound match to come from behind for a 6-5 win. Brannon, who came out on the short end of a 4-2 decision to Huntingtown’s Joey Rice in the regular-season meeting, reversed that outcome with a 6-2 win over Rice on Wednesday.

“There’s no motivation like losing. Daniel was motivated,” Sharp said. “We watched some tape of his match and talked about some things we needed to address and he was able to go out and do it.”

Markus Jarboe (130) and Sammy Murphy (heavyweight) supplied Huntingtown’s lone victories, with Jarboe’s coming by major decision.

“Overall I was realy pleased,” Sharp said. “Now we have the opportunity at least to see what happens on Saturday.”

And that goes back to last year. Through the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, La Plata did not suffer a single loss to another Maryland team. Last year, the Warriors went to the state duals just two matches from three perfect years in-state and a state dual three-peat. This year the Warriors go back with something to prove.

“It’s kind of bittersweet,” Mowry said. “Sweet because we’re going to the big show. Bitter because it brings back memories of last year.”

“We’re going to try again,” added Brannon. “We didn’t get it last year. We’re working harder, doing everything better, doing everything right, looking for another shot at it.”

Altered States No. 4

Altered States No. 4
Feb. 11, 2009

OK, first things first. One of my co-worker’s blogs was brought to my attention, and I need to set the record straight. At a company gathering last week, chronicled in the aforementioned blog, a number of my co-workers engaged in a just-for-fun card game. I, however, did not. I had a splitting headache, and honestly, was ready to hit the road by the time the game kicked into full swing. But as luck would have it, Trey McCray, who was my passenger for the night, played long into the night and was one of the final three with the Ramblin’ Man Dan Sousa and Montgomery County Content Manager Ryan Mink

But, no Dan, I was not knocked out early. I won’t say I would have won, but come on, do you really think I’d lose to McCray or Mink. I mean, geez, Mink’s softball team has never even been able to beat mine. What were you guys last year, Mink, 3-11? Or was it 4-12?

On another note, last night I repaid a favor and helped out Mr. McCray by covering Fairmont Heights at Gwynn Park. Gwynn Park, soon to be regional rivals of North Point, McDonough, Patuxent and Calvert, won handily 73-51. But as the game was winding down the Yellow Jackets treated the sparse crowd to a show with some highlights destined for next week’s Top 10 list. Check them out if you get a chance.

Well, it’s another busy week with multiple events falling on the same nights — really makes a person get creative to figure out how to get to as many places as possible. The Chesapeake Cup hockey tournament is in full swing now. I love hockey (one of these years the Flyers are going to finally win that Cup), and had a chance to cover some a couple weeks back. So that’s on the agenda. Westlake’s girls are at North Point tonight in the third meeting between the teams, and one of the bigger hurdles remaining between the Eagles and a perfect SMAC basketball campaign.

And then there’s La Plata. The Warriors are hosting the 4A/3A South regional duals for the fifth straight season. It’s kind of funny thinking back to 2004-05, when Northern knocked off La Plata in the regional final to deny the Warriors the chance to go forward and wrestle for their first state championship.

Since then the regional duals have not been much more than La Plata’s coronation ceremony. A program that had not had a state championship of any sort — team or individual — hasn’t been without one since. Four different individuals have won state championships and the team has collected two state dual championships and two state tourney titles in the previous three years. The wrestling team’s ’05-’06 wrestling titles also seemed to pave the way for other teams, too, as the indoor track and baseball teams have since collected state championships for a school that had nothing but a girls basketball title in history before. Good stuff, and should be fun to see what kind of run this group can make at this thing this year.

Swimming: SMAC Championships

By Andy States
SMAC Content Manager

As most teams had gathered their belongings and headed for the exits following the SMAC Championships at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex pool on Saturday, the Leonardtown Raiders girls team assembled for pictures with the newest trophy to add to the team’s collection.

In what has become one of the more familiar rituals in the conference, Leonardtown’s girls won a fifth consecutive conference championship on Satuday, winning seven of 11 events to outdistance runner-up Northern 477-317 for the conference’s top spot.

“It never loses it’s excitement, it really doesn’t,” said Leonardtown’s Brittany Culpepper. “Obviously anything can happen, nothing’s guaranteed. It is nice at the end to walk away with it.”

The boys competition was more than a tad bit tighter, but in the end Northern emerged on top after accumulating 383 points to overtake Huntingtown, last year’s champion, by 9.5 points. Leonardtown finished third with 366.5 points.

“We were fired up,” said Northern’s Ben Williamsz, a winner in the 100-yard butterfly. “We thought we had a good chance at winning. A lot of the other teams had a lot of depth, but that really disappears when you get out here.”

Leonardtown won five individual girls events and both the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Justine Cavnor won the 100 freestyle, Olivia Ray the 500 freestyle and Emilly Burghardt the 100 backstroke for the Raiders, while Culpepper swam to meet-record times in both the 200 individual medley (2:17.57) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.94).

“I was pretty happy,” Culpepper said of her performance. “I think probably my favorite one was the 100 breaststroke, of my individuals. I’ve been sitting at a 1:09 since sophomore year. It was nice to finally go under.”

La Plata’s Anna Wells nabbed the top spot in the 200 freestyle, setting a new meet record in the process, while Great Mills’ Melissa Boughton established a new mark in the 100 butterfly. Westlake’s Ebony Sherrill took the 50 freestyle and Westlake’s team triumphed in the 200 freestyle relay.

A year after watching county-rival Huntingtown collect the SMAC trophy, Northern’s boys walked out with it on Saturday.

“We had a good season. Last year we had a good season. Last year we choked at SMAC,” Williamsz said. “This year, though, that fear was kind of unjustified.”

Chris Cranford won both the 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle for Northern to go along with Williamsz win in the 100 butterfly.  Those results paced an overall solid effort that led to the Patriots’ title.

“We had a good chance of winning but this morning when we came out to the bus everyone’s tired and everyone’s not feeling good, we’re on taper so everyone starts to get cold,” Williamsz said, “but they pulled it through. They had the best attitude ever.”

Huntingtown’s Thomas Morgan set a new meet record in the 100 backstroke, and also emerged on top in the 100 freestyle. Leonardtown’s CJ Culpepper set a new meet standard in the 500 freestyle. Ivan Palaroan of Great Mills won the 200 individual medley, while Patuxent’s Kevin Neitzey won the 100 breaststroke.

Great Mills won the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay, the latter by one-hundreth of a second over Northern. Huntingtown nipped Northern at the wall for the 200 freestyle relay.

No. 10 — Potomac Falls 4-Peats 200-Meter Medley
Loudoun County, Virginia — The Panther girls won the Dulles District 200-meter medley for a fourth-straight season at 1:55.70. Potomac Falls senior Kirby Shook has been on the team all four years. She was joined by Carla Harvey, Bridget Werner and Taylor Ayers.

No. 9 — Lane No-Look Dish for Thomas Dunk
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Largo senior Marcell Lane weaves through the defense and hits senior Malik Thomas with a smooth no-look pass for a two-handed slam. Thomas finished with a game-high 31 points in Largo’s 88-71 win over Forestville Academy on January 26.

No. 8 — Soph Paces Forest Park to Cardinal Title
Prince William County, Virginia — Bruin sophomore Briana Murphy won both the 50-meter and 500-meter freestyle events to pace Forest Park to a Cardinal District championship. It clipped Woodbridge, 121-117.

No. 7 — Block Parties
Northern Region, Virginia; Prince George’s County, Maryland — First, Hayfield senior T.J. Wilson elevates — and then seems to rise some more — before spiking this Lake Braddock shot attempt. Then, Duval junior Keith Crocket hustles back on defense to reject a would-be dunk by C.H. Flowers in what proved a 15-point win.

No. 6 — Kick Save and a Beauty

S.M.A.C., Maryland — Warrior senior goalie Dylan Paquette makes one of his 34 saves in the La Plata’s 4-2 win over Huntingtown on January 28.

No. 5 — 60-Foot Buzzer-Beater

Northern Region, Virginia — Madison senior Omi Ogolo earned the praise of his coach, Chris Kuhblank, for his defensive effort in the Warhawks’ 57-43 home win over the Seahawks on January 31. But this shot from his own 3-point line sent the entire gym into an uproar and stole back the momentum from district-leader South Lakes.

No. 4 — 23-Year Streak Snapped

W.C.A.C., Virginia/Maryland —  O’Connell wrestler Kyle Mason slams DeMatha’s Pat Prada to the mat en route to a win in a pivotal bout at the W.C.A.C. championships. The Knights won the league title, snapping a 23-year streak of W.C.A.C. championships for the Stags.

No. 3 — Vesecky Rewrites Raider Records

Loudoun County, Virginia — Loudoun County senior Vicky Vesecky entered the Raiders’ quad meet on Monday having broken a school record in every meet this season. That amazing streak continued after she scored an all-time best 9.35 on her bar routine.

No. 2 — Turning Dasilva Into Gold

Prince George’s County, Maryland — Parkdale wrestler Rafael Dasilva gets a reversal and an amazing pin to win his 215-pound match and clinch a 39-36 win over Bowie on January 31.

No. 1 — Valvano, Vol. II

Northern Region, Virginia — Tied at 39 with rival Hayfield on January 26, Lake Braddock senior Dominic Morra drained the clock down for what was supposed to be the final shot. But senior Jared Watson tipped home Morra’s miss to vault the Bruins to a two-point home win over their district rivals. Check out Lake Braddock coach Brian Metress‘ Jim-Valvano moment, sprinting for someone to hug, after the buzzer-beating win.
