Football: SMAC Week 5 Top 5

SMAC Football Top 5 — Week 5

1. Lackey (4-1, 3-0)
Previous ranking: 2
With another stellar defensive effort, Lackey defeated rival McDonough 23-8 to assume the top spot for the first time this season. With playoff seeding and the conference championship on the line, the Chargers will have to earn it in the coming weeks. The Chargers have Chopticon, North Point and Westlake to look forward to in three of the next four weeks.
This week: vs. Chopticon, Friday at 7 p.m.

2. North Point (4-1, 4-0)
Previous ranking: 4
If anyone had any doubts about North Point, they should be gone now. With Ja’Ron Neal passing for two touchdowns and running for another, the Eagles earned their first win over Westlake 24-13. Following Devon Smith’s 55-yard touchdown run on the first series of the game, North Point’s defense held the conference’s top rushing attack largely in check. With the win the Eagles, in just their second varsity season, find themselves in the race for the SMAC crown. A Week 7 date with Lackey could decide the conference, but before that North Point travels to Leonardtown this week. Leonardtown defeated North Point last year, 20-17.
This week: at Leonardtown, Friday at 7 p.m.

3. Huntingtown (4-1, 3-1)
Previous ranking: 5
A week after suffering its first loss of the season, Huntingtown responded with perhaps its biggest win. The Hurricanes grabbed control early and held off the Panthers in the second half for a 19-18 win. It marked the first time in their five-year history that the Hurricanes have defeated Patuxent. More importantly for Huntingtown, the matchup loomed as possibly the most difficult matchup on the schedule and could help the Hurricanes immensely in earning one of the 3A South’s top playoff seeds down the road.
This week: vs. Loch Raven, Friday at 7 p.m.

4. Westlake (4-1, 3-1)
Previous ranking: 1
Devon Smith took the second play from scrimmage 55 yards for a touchdown, but after that the Wolverines struggled to finish drives and put the ball in the end zone Friday night against North Point. Westlake will look to get its offense clicking again this week at Northern.
This week: at Northern, Friday at 7 p.m.

5. Chopticon (4-1, 2-1)
Previous ranking: NR
Chopticon returns to the rankings after winning 18-13 at Potomac on Saturday. It marks the second consecutive year the Braves beat the Wolverines. A year ago, Chopticon’s 17-14 triple-overtime win over Potomac was critical in the Braves making the 3A South playoff field. Chopticon’s upcoming schedule is brutal, with games against Lackey, Patuxent and Westlake on tap for the next three weeks.
This week: at Lackey, Friday at 7 p.m.

Field Hockey: Patuxent 2, La Plata 0

By Andy States
Content Manger, SMAC

Eight games in, the Patuxent Panthers were still perfect.

Perfect not just in that the Panthers were still unbeaten, but through eight games in the SMAC field hockey season Patuxent had yet to surrender a single goal. In fact, heading into Monday afternoon’s contest at La Plata, the smallest margin of victory enjoyed by the Panthers was three in the second game of the season against Northern. But there was some adversity lurking on the field at La Plata.

Patuxent struggled to find its rhythm against the Warriors, in part due to a field that possesses a much bumpier surface than what the Panthers are used to at home. Still, with goals by Erica Wiltse and Kate Nolan and a defense that stood up to several intense Warriors’ challenges, Patuxent remained perfect with a 2-0 win over the hosts.

“Every new challenge is good for the team,” Patuxent coach Lynn Powell said. “We came out 2-0, so obviously just them adjusting is a good learning experience. They had to stick together because frustration was kind of setting in with the field conditions.

“We’ll take it as a learning experience.”

The learning experience could have come at a good time, as Patuxent (9-0) enters its final three-game stretch to a season which has seen the Panthers outscore the opposition 60-0.

“We strive to do our best,” junior Danielle Gilbert said following the win at La Plata. “We want to score, we want to score. We don’t want any goals against. If it happens, it happens, but we just want to do the best we can.”

Wiltse scored in the first half to put Patuxent in front, and Nolan scored midway through the second half to give the team a little cushion. And, for the first time, the Panthers nearly needed that cushion as La Plata (6-3) nearly pounded one into the cage in the late going. But the Panthers were able to pass the test, which came on the heels of another test in a gritty 4-0 win over Leonardtown on Saturday.

In that contest the Panthers faced a charged-up Leonardtown squad that had support from a vocal group of fans. But then, with the Panthers closing in on conference perfection for two years running, the team expects to take the best shot any opponent can muster.

“Yeah, and the girls know. Everyone’s out to get us,” Powell said. “We went up to Leonardtown and there were signs everywhere, people with painted faces, cheerleaders.

“I said to the girls the last couple days, ‘It’s not about all that.’ It’s about them on the field. They have to focus on them as a team and not worry about anything else.”

La Plata is scheduled to host Lackey on Tuesday, while Patuxent is slated to host Great Mills — the defending 3A South champ — on Wednesday in what could be another good test for the Panthers. But with a tough 2A South Region awaiting in the postseason for the Panthers, how they respond to each of the tests they face could tell a great deal about what kind of run the team can expect in the coming weeks.

“Today it was more like the field in their heads, not so much everything else,” Powell said, “but we know everyone’s out to get us. They’re going to play their best games against us, so it gets tougher. But each day I think it’s them getting better because of these challenges.”

Golf: La Plata wins District 4 title

By Andy States
Content Manager, SMAC

As a freshman three years ago, La Plata’s Jay Dove entered high school already one of the top golfers on a Warriors team poised to contend for a state championship.

Wednesday, after consecutive team state runner-up finishes the past two years, Dove led the Warriors in his final foray into the high school postseason. The La Plata senior shot a 2-under 70 to provide the low round of the District Four tournament at Swan Point, and in the process led the Warriors to the District championship and team qualification as the district’s 4A/3A entrant into the state tournament.

La Plata shot an aggregate 322, two strokes better than North Point and McDonough overall, and six better than the next closest 4A/3A team, Chopticon.

“The main goal was to hit fairways and let the birdies come,” Dove said. “I didn’t him many fairways, but I hit the greens.”

Individually, Dove’s round was four strokes better than runner-up Bobby Ehrhardt of Chopticon, who shot 4-over to lead the Braves’ effort. McDonough’s Cas Dickerson shot 76, Thomas Stone’s Reed Dustin 78 and Lackey’s Greg Deloache 79 to round out the sub-80 scores.

It was not until Dove and La Plata had completed the district tournament, which was the venue for the golfers to qualify for the state tournament which will be held Oct. 21-23 at Potomac Ridge Golf Course,  that the drama really began. Tied at 324, North Point and McDonough were forced to play off for the right to represent the district as the 2A/1A team at the state tournament. Furthermore, five golfers tied at 81 with just four individual berths available, forcing an individual playoff following the team playoff.

North Point entered the tournament as the probable favorite in the 2A/1A field on the heels of its second straight 11-1 regular season, as well as a team appearance in last year’s state tournament. But led by Dickerson’s 76 and a state tournament qualifying 81 from Rob Taylor, the underdog Rams, who like North Point have no seniors in the lineup, pushed North Point to the limit before the Eagles won on the first playoff hole.

“It would have been great for us to beat North Point today, being they’re getting a chance to play states at their home course,” Dickerson said. “If we could have taken that away from them that would have been nice for us to be able to play in the state championship instead of them. Overall, we just played pretty good as a team today.

“It’s a good experience because we know we’re going to be back here next year with the same group of guys. Hopefully we can’t do anything but get better.”

North Point, which entered the tournament on the high of knocking off perennial SMAC power La Plata for the second consecutive season in the regular-season finale the week before, qualified as a team for the 2A/1A tournament for the second year in a row.

“These kids are working their butts off to be mentally and physically ready,” North Point coach Tony Jones said. “Am I glad to be going to states? Yes I am. It just proves that on any given day.”

This year, however, the Eagles have the added benefit of playing the state tournament at Potomac Ridge, which happens to be their home course. Though the team has not played the 18 holes on which the state tournament will be contested, it still has the luxury of going to a familiar place.

“I think the psyche, in their heads, it definitely gives us the plus,” Jones said. “It’s their course. They’ve been playing there all year, although we haven’t got to play the 18 we’re going to play for states.

“But just knowing it’s their home course it’s got to give you a little more comfort and that’s what it’s all about for a golfer.”

Following the team playoff, five golfers played off for the final four individual spots. Out of the mix, Huntingtown’s Joe Stallings, McDonough’s Rob Taylor, Northern’s Tyler Smith and Chopticon’s Kyle King earned the spot in the state tournament field. Stallings earned his spot on the second playoff hole, while the final three spots were clinched on No. 3.

“It was really, really stressful,” said King. “Got off to a rough start [on No. 1], but ended up parring the hole. Second hole was a little **** but luckily three other kids went into the water as well as me and we tied it. The last hole I parred and made it in.”

Team scores: La Plata* 322, North Point* 324, McDonough 324, Chopticon 328, Northern 330, Huntingtown 348, Calvert 353, Patuxent 358, Thomas Stone 362, Leonardtown 366, Great Mills 412, Lackey 476
