‘Canes rally to nip Warriors

Trailing 9-6 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Huntingtown Hurricanes rallied for five runs to surge ahead of the visiting La Plata Warriors and held on for an 11-10 win in a Southern Maryland Athletic Conference baseball matchup on Monday.

La Plata (3-2, 2-2) had taken the lead on Seth Nagle’s two-run homer in the fifth, which ran the score to 8-6. The Warriors tacked on another run in the top of the sixth, but Huntingtown (4-1, 3-1) erupted for five runs in the inning’s bottom half.

After clawing back to tie the score, Billy Gaines lashed a two-run double to right-center to push the eventual winning runs across the plate. Matt O’Grady hit a solo homer for La Plata in the seventh to cut the deficit in half, but the Hurricanes were able to nail down the win on a fielder’s choice after La Plata had put runners on first and second with two outs.

The loss was the second one-run loss of the season for La Plata, the defending conference and state champ. The Warriors are scheduled to play at Leonardtown on Wednesday. Huntingtown, which suffered its first loss of the season in its previous game at Calvert on Friday, is set to host Westlake on Wednesday.
