Altered States, No. 7
March 10, 2009

You ever just get hooked on something and couldn’t stop? Of course, we all have at one time or another. Well, McCray challenged me to this word game on the computer and in the past few days every free second, though there haven’t been many, I’ve been playing this stupid game. My wife’s even played a couple and got mad when I accidentally erased her high score.

But I can’t stop, not yet, because head-to-head against McCray I’m something along the lines of 13-30. It’s not really accurate, though, because he was familiar with the game and I wasn’t. So you chalk up most of the losses to that. But he made the mistake of getting a little too happy about it, and now he’s going to be so buried in challenges it’s going to take him until summer to play them all. And I’m not stopping until I hit .500.

That said, it was a busy week last week. Regional basketball finals, state wrestling — did anything else go on last weekend?

It’s going to be a lot of fun to see Stone back in the state semifinals this year. Would have been nice if they would have had some company from the SMAC, too, but it isn’t easy making it through those regions. And to think, that 3A South is going to get even tougher when Stone drops back into it.

But congrats to all the basketball teams, girls and boys.

Saturday, I spent the whole day at Wise watching the 3A South and 4A South girls and boys finals, which was fine, but it felt a little strange. In the years past that was always a day at the state wrestling tournament. In the years I’ve covered it the conference never had fewer than two state champs, and that was last year when La Plata won the team title, as well. This year there was just one, and part of me feels like it was my fault for upsetting the routine. But congratulations to Jeffrey Williams for bringing one home.

You know, this is a really happy time of year for me. It’s getting close to spring and nicer weather, but most importantly the Phillies are defending champs! Forgive me, been waiting to say that for a while. But just thinking of spring sports locally, we have a new e-mail and phone number to report scores to (because all of you coaches have just been clogging my lines with your nightly updates). We’re going to try to keep all of the region’s scores together, and any coaches out there reading you can send your scores to dcmetroscores@digitalsports.com or call 703-401-4016.

See ya’ out there————–
